Tanzania’s president began her second term under tight security in the capital, where she was sworn in after a disputed election and protests the opposition says left hundreds of people dead.

The security forces maintained a heavy presence on the streets of Dodoma and the nation’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam, where demonstrations erupted on Oct. 29 and spread across the nation over the exclusion of the country’s main opposition leaders from the vote. The East African nation’s electoral authorities on Saturday declared Samia Suluhu Hassan the winner of the elections with 97.66% support.
