Ruling party lawmakers in Honduras installed a temporary congressional body after midnight to assume legislative duties ahead of general elections, provoking cries of an authoritarian takeover by opposition parties, La Prensa newspaper reported.
Leaders of the National and Liberal political parties called the installation of the National Congress Permanent Commission, as the temporary body is known, an illegal maneuver by the ruling Libre party to maintain power, according to La Prensa.
