AMD’s AI Chips to Power Supercomputers at Energy Department Lab

Photographer: David Paul Morris/BloombergAdvanced Micro Devices Inc. is teaming up with the US Energy Department to develop a pair of supercomputers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory that will deploy the company’s artificial intelligence chips to seek breakthroughs in energy and scientific research.
Combined public and private investments in the supercomputers — dubbed Lux and Discovery — will total $1 billion, the company said in a statement Monday. Joining AMD in developing the new supercomputers at the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge research lab are Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and Oracle Corp.’s cloud infrastructure unit.
