French lawmakers didn’t vote on a Socialist proposal for a wealth tax Saturday, delaying a possible compromise in a budget debate that risks toppling the fragile minority government of Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.
The center-left party had added an amendment to the 2026 budget bill for a narrower version of a broad-based levy they have long advocated, named after the economist Gabriel Zucman. But voting on previous budget amendments took too long, and Budget minister Amelie de Montchalin said late Saturday that other articles would be debated on Monday in priority, pushing back the wealth tax vote for later in the week.
