Colossal Says Gene Editing May Create a Rhino in Four Years
A biotech valued at $10 billion said that together with a consortium of scientists from around the world it aims to apply gene editing and other methods and use a surrogate mother to begin bringing back the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction within four years.
Colossal Biosciences Inc., the Dallas-based company that aims to bring long extinct animals such as woolly mammoths back to life, said it could work with researchers from countries including Kenya, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Czech Republic to produce a third northern white rhino. That would add to the last two left, the females Najin and Fatu, that live at a reserve in Kenya’s Rift Valley region. If that attempt is successful others will follow.
