Seychelles elected a new president, denying a second term to a leader who won plaudits for steering the Indian Ocean island nation through the coronavirus pandemic and reviving the economy in its wake.

Medical doctor Patrick Herminie, 62, a former speaker of the National Assembly, was named the winner of a three-day runoff that was held after last month’s first round of voting failed to produce an outright winner. He garnered 52.7% support, with incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan getting the rest, according to Wendy Didon, chairwoman of the country’s electoral commission.
