Japan’s Sanae Takaichi will meet her ruling coalition counterpart on Friday afternoon, amid fears of a possible rupturing of the 26-year partnership that has been a bedrock for political stability in the nation.

The focus of the meeting will be on whether Takaichi, the new leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, will be able to convince junior coalition partner Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito that the LDP will do enough to assuage concerns over a past slush fund scandal.
