Russian lawmakers voted to abandon a defunct treaty with the US on the disposal of military-grade plutonium as Moscow said momentum stemming from the Alaska summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has been exhausted.

The State Duma, the lower chamber of parliament, passed the bill on Wednesday to withdraw from the Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement. The upper chamber must also vote on the matter before the legislation is sent to President Putin for signing into law.
