Before her sudden resignation as UK deputy prime minister a few week ago, Angela Rayner was seen as one of the likeliest people to succeed Keir Starmer as Labour leader, such is her popularity in the party.

So, after resigning from her position by Starmer’s side earlier this month in a row over her taxes, Rayner was conspicuous by her absence at the annual conference of party faithful.
