How Election Win for Czech Billionaire Babis Would Impact EU Ties

Billionaire politician Andrej Babis looks set to return as the Czech Republic’s prime minister, propelled by a populist election campaign infused with Donald Trump-style rhetoric.

If he wins the vote on Oct. 3-4, Babis may need the support of anti-European Union fringe parties in parliament in order to govern. While he’s said the central European nation’s future lies within the bloc, his calls for higher government spending and an end to unconditional support for Ukraine could complicate his country’s relations with European allies.
