UK to Lay Out Tougher Requirements for Settlement Rights
The government is set to define what “contributions” foreign workers must make in order to claim settled status in the UK, marking a tightening of its stance on legal migration.
Addressing Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will say on Monday that migrants will have to earn the right to claim so-called indefinite leave to remain, which gives people access to certain welfare benefits and an ability to work in the country, according to a preview of the speech. However, she will contrast her party’s plans to Nigel Farage’s pledge to scrap ILR entirely, which was branded “racist” by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday.
