Iran’s Parliament to Debate Changing Peaceful Nuclear Doctrine
Iran’s parliament will on Sunday debate a letter by its members calling for a change in the country’s stated policy of not pursuing nuclear weapons, raising the stakes in the diplomatic showdown over Tehran’s atomic work ahead of a key UN vote.
The letter to the Supreme National Security Council by 71 of parliament’s 290 lawmakers “asked for a change in the nuclear strategy” due to “recent events,” Deputy Speaker Ali Nikzad told Iranian state TV, citing the 12-day war with Israel in June.
