Roughly a third of federal student loan borrowers are behind on their payments, resulting in massive hits to their credit scores.

About 29% of borrowers — or 5.4 million people — were delinquent on their loans in June, meaning they haven’t made a payment in 90 days or more, according to new data from TransUnion. That’s just slightly down from the record high of 31% reached in April.
