Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera conceded defeat in the nation’s elections, after partial results showed rival candidate and former leader Peter Mutharika is on course to win the vote.

Chakwera made the announcement as the nation’s electoral authority prepared to announce the official results of the Sept. 16 ballot at 2 p.m. in the capital, Lilongwe, on Wednesday.
