Malawi’s Ex-President Set for Election Win, Partial Count Shows

Partial tallies from Malawi’s elections showed former President Peter Mutharika on track to reclaim the top post in the first round, with incumbent leader Lazarus Chakwera trailing in distant second place.

Mutharika, who led the southern African nation before being voted out of office five years ago, secured 65.4% of the 3.09 million ballots counted in 24 of the 36 councils, and Chakwera 23.3%, according to results released by the Malawi Electoral Commission by late Monday.
