Ragasa intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday and is forecast to strengthen further as it approaches the northern part of the main Luzon island in the Philippines, the weather bureau said, threatening crops and prompting calls for evacuation.

The center of the eye of the super typhoon — known locally as Nando — was at 535 kilometers (332 miles) east of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, a major rice-producing province, according to the latest advisory from the national weather agency Pagasa. It’s packing maximum sustained winds of 185 km per hour, it said.
