House Speaker Mike Johnson signaled the Republican party plans to hold a national convention ahead of next year’s midterm congressional elections, noting that he recently spoke to President Donald Trump about the matter and considers it “a done deal.”

The event would be a remarkable stray from the tradition of holding national party conventions only ahead of the presidential election every four years. It would likely serve as a rally for the party and a way to garner media attention.
