Will Ukraine Join the EU? How Membership Offers a Security Guarantee

The renewed push by US President Donald Trump to negotiate an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine has injected more urgency to the latter’s bid for membership of the European Union.

As Ukraine’s allies discuss security guarantees to deter further Russian territorial grabs, one option for the more distant future would be for Ukraine to become part of the EU, bringing it under the purview of the bloc’s mutual defense clause.
