The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will begin the design process for a light-rail project that will connect the Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods, a major step in making the proposed transit line a reality.

The MTA’s board approved Wednesday a $165.98 million two-year contract with Jacobs/HDR JV, a joint venture between Jacobs Civil Consultants and Henningson, Durham & Richardson Architecture and Engineering, for a preliminary design of the project, according to the transit agency’s board documents. The state-run MTA oversees New York City’s subways, buses and commuter rails.
