Last month was 2.8C (5F) hotter than the 1991 to 2020 average, besting a record set in 2003 when deadly heat gripped much of Europe. Major heat waves hit countries in the region, including Spain, Italy, France, Portugal and Germany, with temperatures above 38C. The heat on land was amplified by unusually hot seas, especially in the western Mediterranean.
