EU’s 2040 Climate Law at Risk After Far Right Takes Control

The European Union is set to face an even tougher challenge in passing its ambitious goal to cut emissions 90% by 2040 after a group skeptical of climate change was nominated as the lead negotiator for the bloc’s assembly.

The Patriots for Europe, a far-right grouping, was appointed as the rapporteur for the European Parliament at a meeting Tuesday, according to a spokesman. The role means the party will oversee negotiations among lawmakers and with EU member states to decide the final shape of the climate law.
