Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would push ahead with controversial cuts to UK disability benefits despite a sizable rebellion brewing within his own Labour Party that threatens to derail the plan.

Starmer told reporters on Tuesday that Labour was elected last July “to change what is broken in our country,” and that there was a “clear moral case” to reform the welfare system. His remarks come after opponents within his party of the government’s £5 billion ($6.8 billion) cuts revealed on Tuesday that they had secured enough support to block the bill, setting up a high-stakes test of the premier’s leadership less than a year into office.
