US stocks advanced on Monday in a volatile start to the week after Qatar said it successfully intercepted Iranian missile attacks with no casualties and President Donald Trump indicated no interest in escalating from here.

The S&P 500 Index closed up 1% in New York — and rose back above the key 6,000 level — while the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index rallied 1.1%. The market’s reaction to the conflict in the Middle East across recent weeks has so far been largely subdued, with US stocks hovering roughly 2% away from an all-time high.
