All About the ICC Case Against Israel’s Netanyahu
The International Criminal Court sparked an angry response from Israel in November when it issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the nation’s former defense minister for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government denied the charges, saying its conduct in the conflict was in line with international law. Netanyahu’s office said the ICC’s decision was “motivated by anti-Semitic hatred of Israel.”
US President Donald Trump has called the warrants “baseless.” On June 5, his government announced sanctions on four ICC judges over alleged “transgressions” against the US and Israel. Another challenge to the court’s authority came in April, when Netanyahu visited ICC member Hungary, whose Trump-supporting Prime Minister Viktor Orban refused to arrest the Israeli leader and said his country planned to quit the tribunal.
