UK Gas Generation Plunges as Wind Surge Turns Prices Negative
The UK’s blustery conditions are allowing the country to get more than half of its electricity from cheaper renewable sources, pushing down gas generation to the lowest level since October.
Wind farms supplied 59% of the UK’s power needs on Thursday morning, according to data from grid operator NESO. Gas generation, meanwhile, fell to as low as 1.2 gigawatts, less than a quarter of the average for the last month, Elexon data show. The surge in wind briefly pushed intraday power prices below zero.
