Large colonies of penguins in Antarctica have an ability to influence the atmosphere and could be helping reduce the impact of climate change, according to a scientific study.

Accumulated penguin excrement — or guano — emits ammonia, a gas that can contribute to the formation of clouds and which is likely generating a cooling effect by creating a buffer between the sun’s heat and Antarctica’s ice and water.
