The UK government is in talks with several countries about hosting so-called return hubs to receive failed asylum seekers, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to reduce the cost of housing them and cut a backlog of claims that need processing.

“We are in talks with a number of countries about return hubs,” Starmer told reporters in a press conference in Albania, where he spoke alongside his Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama. He described such centers as “a really important innovation” that can help Britain tackle the issue.
