The US took a fresh step seeking to curb Iran’s oil revenues with sanctions on an international network that it said facilitates the shipment of millions of barrels to China, an effort by the Trump administration to further pressure Tehran while negotiating over its nuclear program.
The US State Department on Tuesday said the targeted network helped ship oil worth billions of dollars on behalf of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff and its alleged front company called Sepehr Energy Jahan Nama Pars. It said revenue from the sales fund the development of weapons including ballistic missiles and drones, nuclear proliferation and Iran’s “terrorist proxies.”
