New York’s Long Island Rail Road, the nation’s largest commuter line, is bracing for potential delays as Amtrak plans to start years-long repair work on an East River tunnel that will limit service.

Amtrak is set to begin closing part of the tunnel on May 9 and rehabilitation work has already begun, according to an Amtrak spokesperson. The work is needed to renovate tracks and signals after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 flooded the structure.
