Mediobanca SpA has launched a surprise takeover bid for the private banking arm of Assicurazioni Generali SpA, highlighting the insurance giant’s role as the center of gravity for Italy’s M&A frenzy.
The offer for Banca Generali, which would create a major wealth manager with some €210 billion ($238 billion) in client funds, has long been in Chief Executive Officer Alberto Nagel’s sights, he said on an analyst call Monday.
