UN Urges Ceasefire as Fighting Flares Between South Sudan Rivals

The United Nations called for a cessation of hostilities between the army and fighters loyal to South Sudan’s deputy president to prevent a “fragile” security situation deteriorating further in the oil-producing nation.

The UN is “deeply concerned” by reports of clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition that have led to casualties and the displacement of civilians, the UN Mission in South Sudan said in an emailed statement on Friday. The SPLA-IO is led by Vice President Riek Machar.
