President Donald Trump’s pick to take the lead on US sanctions strategy warned of “consequences” for any nation that imports Venezuelan oil, signaling a tough line against Nicolas Maduro’s regime and potential repercussions for China.
The threat from John Hurley, a hedge fund veteran who’s been nominated to oversee the Treasury Department’s terrorism and financial intelligence arm, follows a White House executive order last month that said countries could face 25% tariffs on trade with the US if they purchase oil and gas from the OPEC member.
