Summers Urges Harvard to Make Changes Without US Interference

Harvard sued the government on Monday, saying it unlawfully suspended more than $2 billion in federal funding after it refused to comply with “unconstitutional demands” to overhaul governance, discipline and hiring policies, as well as diversity programs.

Harvard University needs to reform its approach to antisemitism, disciplining students and complying with the Supreme Court on affirmative action, but the US government shouldn’t dictate how the institution is run, said its former president Larry Summers.

“I want to make sure that Harvard does carry through with necessary reform,” Summers, who is also a former Treasury Secretary, said on Bloomberg Television’s Wall Street Week with David Westin. “But gosh, we can’t have the government ordering universities around in violation of all the processes that are prescribed by law.”
