The US Department of Health and Human Services will unveil a plan later today to remove eight petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the country’s food supply, ramping up pressure on major food makers.
The agency wants the dyes removed from the food supply by the end of 2026, a spokesperson said. Petroleum-based synthetic dyes are colors used in a wide variety of food, from cereal to sugary drinks. Food industry trade groups have said they’re safe and that it would be costly and time-consuming to replace them.
