British farmers are planning to mount a legal challenge against the government for its unexpected decision to shutter a grant program for farms, in the latest sign of growing tensions between the ruling Labour Party and rural communities.

Farmers affected by ministers’ sudden decision last month to close the Sustainable Farming Incentive for new entrants have engaged lawyers to explore a judicial review of the policy, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named discussing confidential proceedings.
