A coalition deal between Germany’s center-left Social Democrats and Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz’s conservatives has yet to be signed, but rifts between the parties are already appearing.

Merz triggered a backlash from his likely junior coalition partners for suggesting that Germany would under his leadership provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles. The parties are also sparring over key elements of their coalition deal, including increasing the national minimum wage to €15 and reducing taxes on low-income households.
