Japan is set for talks with the US this week that will test whether President Donald Trump is ready to strike trade deals — and whether being a close ally will carry any weight at the negotiating table.

As one of the first nations to engage in formal negotiations, Japan can’t benefit from seeing how hard the US will press others for concessions or study the strategies of its peers, but it still has some leverage after its early move.
