Carney Proposes to Speed Up Canada’s Rearmament, Looking to Europe

Mark Carney said a government led by him would speed up Canada’s military spending plans and change its defense-procurement strategy so that it doesn’t depend as much on US contractors, if his Liberal Party wins this month’s election.

The prime minister told reporters Monday that his military priorities, which include increasing Canada’s presence in the Arctic, would cause defense spending to rise above 2% of gross domestic product “within a few years.”
