A Tanzanian court on Thursday charged opposition leader Tundu Lissu with treason, which carries the maximum penalty of death, as tensions mount in the East African nation before October elections.

Lissu, who survived an assassination attempt in 2017, was arrested at a public rally in the country’s south the day before while campaigning with his Chadema party for electoral reforms.
