Warfare Is Here to Teach Us (Yet Again) That War Is Hell
An unflinching look at modern combat, starring just about every famous young man in Hollywood today.
Kit Connor as a baby-faced soldier in Warfare.
Source: A24Warfare should not be fun, so it’s no surprise that Warfare, the new film co-directed by Alex Garland, is, for the most part, not fun. In its devotion to re-create the recollections of veterans who served in Iraq, it is at times monotonous and brutal, a harrowing document that forces you to watch young men traumatized in real time.
The result is a film that’s effective but hard to recommend. Is it well made? Incredibly. Is it strongly acted? Indeed, the cast of hot young things from your favorite movies and television shows do a great job. Should you rush to the theater? That depends. It will undoubtedly make you feel awful … but that’s also sort of the point.
