Turkey is pushing ahead with plans to build military bases in Syria, raising tensions with Israel and causing US President Donald Trump to step in and say he’ll mediate between the two Middle Eastern powers.

In a meeting at the Oval Office Monday, Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be “reasonable” over any disputes with Turkey. Speaking alongside one of his closest allies, Trump praised his relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and volunteered to become a go-between between the two countries.
