Canadian stocks sank into correction territory on Friday as US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on major trading partners spark fears of a recession.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed 4.7% lower in Toronto for its biggest single-day drop since March 2020, putting the country’s benchmark equities index 10% below its most recent peak in January. The index declined 6.3% over the course of the week, its worst such stretch since June 2022.
