Donald Trump is ratcheting up pressure on elite American universities that the US president and his allies view as promoting progressive ideals at the expense of conservative values.

His administration has targeted schools such as Columbia and Harvard, saying they need to do more to crack down on pro-Palestinian protests and address antisemitism allegations to continue receiving federal dollars. It has held back funding to the University of Pennsylvania over the school's policies allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. Several of the colleges are falling in line, while some faculty and students are outraged.
