An environmental rule designed to rein in emissions from ships in the Mediterranean is sending regional diesel prices into a spin.

The cost of a particularly dirty type of diesel, known as 0.1% gasoil, surpassed the price of a much cleaner version of the fuel earlier this month — an inversion that hasn’t happened since at least 2022, according to figures from S&P Global Inc. That’s partly due to an upcoming environmental regulation that’s set to change the amount of sulfur allowed in ship propellant.
