US lawmakers are renewing efforts to scrutinize foreign funding at American colleges, warning of the risk that countries such as China are using academic partnerships to potentially access sensitive research on artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

The legislation, passed by the House on Thursday with Republican backing and some Democratic support, would lower the threshold for disclosing foreign donations and contracts. It would also require colleges to report any amount of money coming from countries considered national security threats, including China and Russia.
