Angola is terminating its mediation efforts for the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to allow President Joao Lourenco to focus on his new role as chairman of the African Union.

“Angola recognizes the need to relieve itself of the responsibility of mediating this conflict in order to dedicate itself more broadly to the general priorities defined by the continental organization, which are related to the peace and security of the continent as a whole,” the presidency said in a statement on its Facebook page.
