Germany’s Environment Agency warned the incoming government against tossing out a ban on fossil-fuel heating systems, with the nation poised to narrowly miss its 2030 climate targets in the housing and transport sectors.

“I would strongly advise the next federal government to stick to the law,” the agency’s president Dirk Messner told reporters on Friday. Europe’s biggest economy aims to slash carbon emissions by two-thirds by the end of the decade. However, decarbonising the housing sector has been tough because as many as 80% of the nation’s buildings are heated with oil or gas.
