The regional premium for aluminum delivered to the US market stood at a record high as US President Donald Trump said he’ll impose a 50% tariff on Canadian shipments of the lightweight metal.
The so-called US Midwest premium, the amount added to global benchmarks to deliver aluminum to that region, approached 42 cents after climbing about 10% toward 45 cents earlier Tuesday, according to pricing data from Platts. At 42 cents, that’s a record high in data going back to 2013.
