Ev Williams has spent most of his professional life focused on letting people share their ideas with the world from behind a keyboard. Now Williams, 52, who co-founded Blogger, Twitter and Medium, is going in a different direction.

His new startup, Mozi, is a private social network — no public profiles, no follower counts — and is meant to encourage more in-person meet-ups. The app alerts people when they are in the same city as contacts listed in their phone, and also lets them see which acquaintances are attending events in their area. Mozi will debut a new feature this week in Austin at SXSW, formerly known as South by Southwest, focused on local events.
