Some economists see China in danger of sliding into the same kind of multi-decade struggle against deflation and dismal growth that Japan suffered in the 1990s and 2000s.

There are plenty of parallels supporting the case for China’s “Japanification.” Like Tokyo following the burst of the nation’s bubble economy, Beijing is struggling to turn around anemic growth and falling prices, weak loan demand and plunging bond yields, as well as a declining population.
